GPA Calculation

The GPA is the grade point average and is calculated to a semester and career average. The GPA is calculated by summing all the points earned for each course by the total number of credit hours taken. (The points are calculated by multiplying the grade points earned for a course by the number of credit hours. The credit hour for a course is the last digit of the course number).

In the Oklahoma system of college and universities, three GPA's are calculated.

  • Term or Semester GPA: this GPA is calculated for each semester .

  • Retention/Graduation GPA: this is the Oklahoma GPA that calculates cumulative hours and points excluding courses that are zero-level and activity related. This GPA is used to determine honors, probation, suspension, and graduation conferrals.

  • Cumulative or Career GPA: this GPA includes all coursework except for zero-level courses that a student has completed.

HOLDS: Prevent Mailing of Grade Report

The Office of Admissions mails grades to students at the end of each semester and to the current mailing address on record. "Holds" or "stops" may be placed on students' academic records that will prevent the Office of Admissions from mailing grades or transcripts.
Student may have a HOLD placed on their academic records from several offices. Contact numbers for the following offices are:

* Business Office: 918-647-1325

* Housing/Meals: 918-647-1371

* Financial Aid: 918-647-1340

* Library: 918-647-1311

* All other holds contact the Office of Admissions 918-647-1300

These offices will give Admissions  personnel a "Release of Hold" from which the student's records will be cleared and grades/transcripts can be issued.

In general, students who have a Retention/Graduation GPA of 2.00 or higher will be considered in good academic standing. However, students may be placed on academic probation or suspension as the consequence of poor academic performance or as the GPA falls below a 2.00.

The retention/graduation GPA is calculated from all courses except for those zero-level, physical education activity, or those hours involving academic forgiveness.

Academic Notice

Students who are freshmen  and earn between a 1.7 - 2.0 GPA will be placed on academic notice at the conclusion of an academic term.  Students under academic notice may continue without penalty.

Probation

Students will be placed on academic probation if the following Retention/Graduation GPA is not met. Students are notified by mail of their probation and are cautioned about the next step - suspension.

  • * 1 - 30 credit hours and less than a 1.70 GPA
  • * 31 credit hours or greater and less than a 2.00 GPA

Suspension

Students will be placed on academic suspension when, after one semester under probation, the Retention/Graduation GPA remains below a 2.00 GPA.  However, students may continue enrollment under probation when a term GPA of 2.00 or above is achieved in all course work (excluding activity & zero-level).

Suspended students may not re-enroll in the next regular semester (fall/spring) following suspension and may be reinstated after one semester (fall/spring) has elapsed. Suspended students have the right to petition the Academic Affairs Committee for reinstatement into the semester of suspension.

Students who are suspended are notified by mail of their suspension and will be dropped from that semester's classes. Students may appeal suspension by completing a Suspension Appeals form (available in the Office of Admissions).

Honor Roll - End of Term

Honor rolls are the consequence of good to superior academic performance and determined at the conclusion of each academic term.

Students who are full-time and earn a 3.0 GPA or higher will be recognized for achievement in the Dean's Honor Roll (3.0 GPA and above) or in the President's Honor Roll (4.0 GPA). In the determination of honor rolls, full-time hours of 12 hours or greater in the fall or spring terms and 6 hours or greater in the summer term can not include hours generated from zero-level classes and activity classes, or any grade lower than a "C". Honor rolls will be sent for publication to the student's local newspaper, except for those students who requested a "Non-Disclosure Statement".

Graduation Honors

Students who earn a two-year associates degree may be considered for Graduation Honors when the ending Retention/Graduation GPA is greater than 3.25. Certificates of completion are not eligible for graduation honors.

The following honors are noted on the printed diploma and recorded to the academic transcript as follows:

  • * Highest Honors - 3.75 to 4.00 GPA
  • * High Honors - 3.50 to 3.74 GPA
  • * Honors - 3.25 to 3.49 GPA
